International conference on surgical nutrition highlights specific diets for patient recovery
The International conference on Surgical Nutrition ICSN 2019 focused on the importance of comprehensive nutritional support for best outcome for patient recovery.
The two days event held between November 22 and 23, 2019 at the MS Ramaiah Medical College was organised by Indian Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN) Bangalore.
The event was co-hosted by The Surgery Department of Ramaiah Medical College in an effort to bring to fore nutrition support and planning besides whether nutritional interventions change outcomes in malnourished patients.
Prof Takashi Higashiguch, chairman, Board of trustees, for the Japanese PEN society was the Chief Guest of the conference and addressed on the ERAS protocol and importance of protein in critical care.
The conference was attended by 300 delegates including doctors and dietitians from Nepal, Bangladesh and Srilanka. The topics included nutrition in pre and post op surgical patients including oncology, cardiac transplant, parenteral nutrition, poly trauma and also in special surgical settings.
There was an overwhelming response to the Dysphagia Workshop which was titled ‘Bridging the Gap between Speech Language Pathologists and Dietitians for Managing Dysphagia’.
Bench side to bed side nutritional assessment in hospital setting topic delivered by Shilpa Varma, national secretary, Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN). She discussed in detail about the IMW toolkit which is an app consisting of nutrition screening and assessment tools to screen malnutrition both in the community and hospitals.
The organizers and the participants viewed the conference as a platform for learning about the importance of nutrition in surgical patients. IAPEN has successfully brought clinical dietitians and doctors in the same platform to learn about the importance of Nutrition.
